A $3,000 municipal grant provided through a partnership between Invest Greenville and Pitt County Government has helped the Town of Grifton take an important step toward revitalizing its downtown by investing in the appearance and long-term vitality of its commercial district.

The grant allowed Grifton to re-establish its downtown façade grant program, awarding two $1,500 microgrants for exterior improvements to commercial properties in the downtown area. While the individual awards were modest, they helped leverage additional private investment and demonstrated how strategic public funding can encourage broader community revitalization.

"The Façade Grant Program has helped spark new interest in our downtown, particularly among prospective business owners who are starting to see the potential here," said Dylan Haman, town manager for the Town of Grifton. "While we still have significant work ahead to fully revitalize the area, this program has been an important first step in building momentum and encouraging investment."

One of the façade grants supported exterior improvements to a commercial building in downtown Grifton. The project enhanced the property's appearance, contributing to a more attractive and welcoming downtown streetscape while encouraging continued investment throughout the district.

The improvements also leveraged significant private investment. In addition to the grant funded work, the property owner invested several thousand dollars in additional exterior renovations, demonstrating how strategic public funding can encourage broader reinvestment that benefits the entire downtown district.

The second microgrant supported improvements to another downtown commercial property preparing to welcome a new tenant. Grant funding helped replace an outdated residential style front door with a commercial grade entrance, improving both the appearance and functionality of the building. The property owner also completed a full façade renovation through additional private investment, creating a more inviting storefront that will contribute to the continued revitalization of downtown Grifton.

While the physical improvements are immediately noticeable, the broader impact of the project lies in what it represents. Attractive commercial buildings help create a welcoming environment, strengthen a community's identity, and inspire additional investment from neighboring property owners. As downtown properties continue to be improved, they contribute to a stronger sense of place and lay the foundation for future economic opportunities.

"Every community has projects that can create momentum for something larger," said David Horn, vice president of operations and strategic partnerships at Invest Greenville. "Grifton used this grant to re establish a program that encourages reinvestment where it matters most, its downtown. By helping municipalities pursue projects that align with their local vision, we're supporting improvements that have lasting value for the entire community."

Kelly Andrews, director of Pitt County Economic Development, said the project illustrates how municipal grants can strengthen communities by empowering local leaders to address their own priorities.

"Strong downtowns contribute to the overall health of a community," Andrews said. "Projects like Grifton's façade grant program improve the character of the built environment while encouraging additional investment from property owners. Those types of improvements help create places where people want to visit, invest, and spend time."

Town leaders see the façade grant program as an important building block for Grifton's long term revitalization efforts.

"The Façade Grant Program is an important step toward strengthening our downtown and supporting the small businesses that make up the heart of our community," Haman said. "We're encouraged by the growing interest from new businesses, even as we recognize there's still more work ahead to fully realize our vision. This investment is helping us move in the right direction."

The Grifton project demonstrates how municipal grants can create impacts that extend beyond the individual projects they fund. By encouraging reinvestment, enhancing the appearance of downtown, and helping communities advance their own revitalization goals, the partnership between Invest Greenville and Pitt County Government continues to support projects that strengthen municipalities across Pitt County and position them for long-term success.
